Complex problems may require lengthy code and/or complicated logic to yield the intended result set. As a result, it is often easier to solve complex problems by breaking the problem down into manageable chunks or subproblems. A positive side-effect of this is others and your future self may find the code and underlying strategy easier to understand. Common table expressions (CTE) in Oracle and other relational database management systems provide a method for structuring your code that yields a transparent strategy. CTEs are also often referred to as named, temporary result sets.
Common Use Cases
1. The task at hand requires a lengthy and/or complex temporary result set and is referenced one or more times. CTEs allow you to reuse blocks of code without having to repeat yourself in your code.
2. Multiple questions will be answered using a base data set or foundation. This base data set or foundation is typically a defined subset of a table or multiple tables.
3. There exists a logical grouping or separation of subproblems.
I’ve written two example problems below. My hope is to highlight the advantages of common table expressions by illustrating how they are interwoven with the problem-solving strategy of breaking down a seemingly complex problem into multiple subproblems. After each example, coding solution incorporating CTEs, and output, I also provide a solution not using CTEs for comparison. At the end of this page, I comment on the alternative solutions not using CTEs.
Before reading further, consider reviewing the Example Data section below to familiarize yourself with the data being used throughout the examples on this page. If you are already familiar with the data, then skip to the Problem 1 section.

| 2412 | 8MB EDO Memory | 8 MB 8×32 EDO SIM memory. Extended Data Out memory differs from FPM in a small, but significant design change. Unlike FPM, the data output drivers for EDO remain on when the memory controller removes the column address to begin the next cycle. Therefore, a new data cycle can begin before the previous cycle has completed. EDO is available on SIMMs and DIMMs, in 3.3 and 5 volt varieties. | 14 | 1 | -6 | 102058 | obsolete | 98 | 83 | http://www.supp-102058.com/cat/hw/p2412.html |
| 2378 | DIMM – 128 MB | 128 MB DIMM memory. The main reason for the change from SIMMs to DIMMs is to support the higher bus widths of 64-bit processors. | 2400 | DIMM – 512 MB | 512 MB DIMM memory. Improved memory upgrade granularity: Fewer DIMMs are required to upgrade a system than it would require if using SIMMs in the same system. Increased maximum memory ceilings: Given the same number of memory slots, the maximum memory of a system using DIMMs is more than one using SIMMs. DIMMs have separate contacts on each side of the board, which provide two times the data rate as one SIMM. | 14 | 1 | 1 | 102098 | under development | 448 | 380 | http://www.supp-102098.com/cat/hw/p2400.html |

| 1739 | SDRAM – 128 MB | SDRAM memory, 128 MB capacity. SDRAM can access data at speeds up to 100 MHz, which is up to four times as fast as standard DRAMs. The advantages of SDRAM can be fully realized, however, only by computers designed to support SDRAM. SDRAM is available on 5 and 3.3 volt DIMMs. | 14 | 1 | -9 | 102077 | orderable | 299 | 248 | http://www.supp-102077.com/cat/hw/p1739.html |
| 3359 | SDRAM – 16 MB | SDRAM memory upgrade module, 16 MB. Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory was introduced after EDO. Its architecture and operation are based on those of the standard DRAM, but SDRAM provides a revolutionary change to main memory that further reduces data retrieval times. SDRAM is synchronized to the system clock that controls the CPU. This means that the system clock controlling the functions of the microprocessor also controls the SDRAM functions. This enables the memory controller to know on which clock cycle a data request will be ready, and therefore eliminates timing delays. | 14 | 1 | -9 | 102059 | orderable | 111 | 99 | http://www.supp-102059.com/cat/hw/p3359.html |
| 3088 | SDRAM – 32 MB | SDRAM module with ECC – 32 MB capacity. SDRAM has multiple memory banks that can work simultaneously. Switching between banks allows for a continuous data flow. | 14 | 1 | -9 | 102057 | orderable | 258 | 220 | http://www.supp-102057.com/cat/hw/p3088.html |
| 2276 | SDRAM – 48 MB | Memory SIMM: RAM – 48 MB. SDRAM can operate in burst mode. In burst mode, when a single data address is accessed, an entire block of data is retrieved rather than just the one piece. The assumption is that the next piece of data that will be requested will be sequential to the previous. Since this is usually the case, data is held readily available. | 14 | 1 | -9 | 102058 | orderable | 269 | 215 | http://www.supp-102058.com/cat/hw/p2276.html |
| 3086 | VRAM – 16 MB | Citrus Video RAM module – 16 MB capacity. VRAM is used by the video system in a computer to store video information and is reserved exclusively for video operations. It was developed to provide continuous streams of serial data for refreshing video screens. | 14 | 1 | -6 | 102056 | orderable | 211 | 186 | http://www.supp-102056.com/cat/hw/p3086.html |
| 3091 | VRAM – 64 MB | Citrus Video RAM memory module – 64 MB capacity. Physically, VRAM looks just like DRAM with added hardware called a shift register. The special feature of VRAM is that it can transfer one entire row of data (up to 256 bits) into this shift register in a single clock cycle. This ability significantly reduces retrieval time, since the number of fetches is reduced from a possible 256 to a single fetch. The main benefit of having a shift register available for data dumps is that it frees the CPU to refresh the screen rather than retrieve data, thereby doubling the data bandwidth. For this reason, VRAM is often referred to as being dual-ported. However, the shift register will only be used when the VRAM chip is given special instructions to do so. The command to use the shift register is built into the graphics controller. | 14 | 1 | -6 | 102098 | orderable | 279 | 243 | http://www.supp-102098.com/cat/hw/p3091.html |

Problem 1
Write a query that retrieves, for each customer’s first and last order, the details of the orders. If a customer has placed more than one order, then for the corresponding customer, two rows should be returned, otherwise one row. One for the first order and another for the last order (most recent). For each order, include the customer ID, order ID, order date, order total, and a list of products ordered in the output. Use semi-colons as the separator for each order’s product listing.
Strategy
Break the problem down into the following three subproblems:
1. Retrieve the first and last order for each customer. Include the customer ID, order ID, and order date in the output. See first_last_order CTE.
2. Retrieve the order total for each order. Include the order ID and corresponding order total in the output. See order_total CTE.
3. Retrieve a list of products ordered for each order. Include the order ID and list of products in the output. Each product in a list should be separated by a semi-colon. See product_concatenated CTE.
Finally, bring the solutions to each subproblem together to solve the overall problem. For clarity, see the code and corresponding output below.

Problem 2
The order entry data contains orders that span from March 2004 to August 2008. Write a query that retrieves, for each month from March 2004 to August 2008, the number of orders placed, the most popular product based on quantity ordered, the sum of all order totals, and total quantity ordered.
Strategy
Break the problem down into the following three subproblems:
1. Create a list of dates, in the format YYYY-MM-01 by truncating the month (i.e., 4-digit year, 2-digit month, 01 day), spanning from March 2004 to August 2008. See recursive CTE, calendar.
2. For each month, retrieve the total quantity ordered of products and the order total across all orders. Include the order date (grouped by month) in the same format as those generated in subproblem 1, the quantity total, and order total in the output. See monthly_order_summary CTE.
3. For each month, retrieve the product ordered the most in terms of quantity ordered. Include the order date (grouped by month) in the same format as those generated in subproblem 1, the product name, and total quantity ordered. See monthly_top_product CTE.
Finally, bring the solutions to each subproblem together to solve the overall problem. For clarity, see the code and corresponding output below.

An almost “CTE-less” solution resulting in the same output can be found below. Out of necessity, I used a recursive CTE for creating the calendar with the remainder of the code relying on subqueries.
WITH calendar (reporting_month) AS (
SELECT
TRUNC(MIN(oe.orders.order_date), 'MONTH')
FROM
oe.orders
UNION ALL
SELECT
ADD_MONTHS(calendar.reporting_month, 1)
FROM
calendar
WHERE
calendar.reporting_month < (
SELECT
TRUNC(MAX(oe.orders.order_date), 'MONTH')
FROM
oe.orders
)
)
SELECT
calendar.reporting_month,
monthly_order_summary.quantity_total,
monthly_order_summary.order_total,
monthly_top_product.product_name,
monthly_top_product.total_ordered
FROM calendar
LEFT JOIN (
SELECT
TRUNC(oe.orders.order_date, 'MONTH') AS order_date,
SUM(oe.order_items.quantity) AS quantity_total,
SUM(oe.order_items.quantity * oe.order_items.unit_price) AS order_total
FROM
oe.orders
INNER JOIN
oe.order_items
ON oe.orders.order_id = oe.order_items.order_id
GROUP BY
TRUNC(oe.orders.order_date, 'MONTH')
) monthly_order_summary
ON calendar.reporting_month = monthly_order_summary.order_date
LEFT JOIN (
SELECT
product_popularity.order_date,
product_popularity.product_name,
product_popularity.total_ordered
FROM (
SELECT
TRUNC(oe.orders.order_date, 'MONTH') AS order_date,
oe.product_information.product_name,
SUM(oe.order_items.quantity) AS total_ordered,
DENSE_RANK() OVER (
PARTITION BY TRUNC(oe.orders.order_date, 'MONTH')
ORDER BY SUM(oe.order_items.quantity) DESC
) popularity_sequence
FROM
oe.orders
INNER JOIN
oe.order_items
ON oe.orders.order_id = oe.order_items.order_id
INNER JOIN
oe.product_information
ON oe.order_items.product_id = oe.product_information.product_id
GROUP BY
TRUNC(oe.orders.order_date, 'MONTH'),
oe.product_information.product_name
) product_popularity
WHERE
product_popularity.popularity_sequence = 1
) monthly_top_product
ON calendar.reporting_month = monthly_top_product.order_date
ORDER BY
calendar.reporting_month;
In each solution not utilizing CTEs, you’ll notice a heavy reliance on subqueries in the solution. Arguably, this causes a loss in readability and lack of clear separation of code dedicated to solving each subproblem when compared to the solutions relying on CTEs. The point is not that subqueries are not inherently bad. In fact, many real-world problems solved using subqueries do not suffer from a loss of readability. It’s that a conscious decision to use (or not use) one over the other is required. I find when a problem requires multiple subqueries or nested subqueries, it’s often a good indicator the code should be rewritten to use CTEs or temporary tables. That said, I couldn’t possibly be covering a SQL topic without having to say that my finding is not equivalent to a hard and fast rule, but only that “it depends.”
