FROM CLAUSE

Common Use Cases
1. Due to the order of execution of query clauses, the SELECT statement (i.e., the subquery) must first be processed for its result set or output to be referenced and/or filterable. For example, window/analytic functions, such as ROW_NUMBER, RANK, and DENSE_RANK are commonly used to tag rows with integer values associated with a user-defined ranking system. Because the corresponding attribute is derived in the SELECT clause, a user is unable to reference the derived attribute in the WHERE clause of the same SELECT statement. Thus, a subquery is required.

2. There is a need to include data at multiple levels of detail within a single result set. For example, a task may require a value within each row of a table to be compared to the result of some aggregate (e.g., average, sum, min, etc.) function computed across those rows belonging to the same group.

Example Data
The schemas, corresponding tables, and data used in the example problems can be found at livesql.oracle.com. oe.order_items
Contains information related to each item within a specific order. There is one row for each item within each order. For example, if a specific order has five items, then those five items will be represented by and captured within five individual rows.

24128MB EDO Memory8 MB 8×32 EDO SIM memory. Extended Data Out memory differs from FPM in a small, but significant design change. Unlike FPM, the data output drivers for EDO remain on when the memory controller removes the column address to begin the next cycle. Therefore, a new data cycle can begin before the previous cycle has completed. EDO is available on SIMMs and DIMMs, in 3.3 and 5 volt varieties.141-6102058obsolete9883http://www.supp-102058.com/cat/hw/p2412.html
2378DIMM – 128 MB128 MB DIMM memory. The main reason for the change from SIMMs to DIMMs is to support the higher bus widths of 64-bit processors. DIMMs are 64- or 72-bits wide; SIMMs are only 32- or 36-bits wide (with parity).141-6102050orderable305247http://www.supp-102050.com/cat/hw/p2378.html

2400DIMM – 512 MB512 MB DIMM memory. Improved memory upgrade granularity: Fewer DIMMs are required to upgrade a system than it would require if using SIMMs in the same system. Increased maximum memory ceilings: Given the same number of memory slots, the maximum memory of a system using DIMMs is more than one using SIMMs. DIMMs have separate contacts on each side of the board, which provide two times the data rate as one SIMM.1411102098under development448380http://www.supp-102098.com/cat/hw/p2400.html

1739SDRAM – 128 MBSDRAM memory, 128 MB capacity. SDRAM can access data at speeds up to 100 MHz, which is up to four times as fast as standard DRAMs. The advantages of SDRAM can be fully realized, however, only by computers designed to support SDRAM. SDRAM is available on 5 and 3.3 volt DIMMs.141-9102077orderable299248http://www.supp-102077.com/cat/hw/p1739.html
3359SDRAM – 16 MBSDRAM memory upgrade module, 16 MB. Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory was introduced after EDO. Its architecture and operation are based on those of the standard DRAM, but SDRAM provides a revolutionary change to main memory that further reduces data retrieval times. SDRAM is synchronized to the system clock that controls the CPU. This means that the system clock controlling the functions of the microprocessor also controls the SDRAM functions. This enables the memory controller to know on which clock cycle a data request will be ready, and therefore eliminates timing delays.141-9102059orderable11199http://www.supp-102059.com/cat/hw/p3359.html
3088SDRAM – 32 MBSDRAM module with ECC – 32 MB capacity. SDRAM has multiple memory banks that can work simultaneously. Switching between banks allows for a continuous data flow.141-9102057orderable258220http://www.supp-102057.com/cat/hw/p3088.html
2276SDRAM – 48 MBMemory SIMM: RAM – 48 MB. SDRAM can operate in burst mode. In burst mode, when a single data address is accessed, an entire block of data is retrieved rather than just the one piece. The assumption is that the next piece of data that will be requested will be sequential to the previous. Since this is usually the case, data is held readily available.141-9102058orderable269215http://www.supp-102058.com/cat/hw/p2276.html
3086VRAM – 16 MBCitrus Video RAM module – 16 MB capacity. VRAM is used by the video system in a computer to store video information and is reserved exclusively for video operations. It was developed to provide continuous streams of serial data for refreshing video screens.141-6102056orderable211186http://www.supp-102056.com/cat/hw/p3086.html
3091VRAM – 64 MBCitrus Video RAM memory module – 64 MB capacity. Physically, VRAM looks just like DRAM with added hardware called a shift register. The special feature of VRAM is that it can transfer one entire row of data (up to 256 bits) into this shift register in a single clock cycle. This ability significantly reduces retrieval time, since the number of fetches is reduced from a possible 256 to a single fetch. The main benefit of having a shift register available for data dumps is that it frees the CPU to refresh the screen rather than retrieve data, thereby doubling the data bandwidth. For this reason, VRAM is often referred to as being dual-ported. However, the shift register will only be used when the VRAM chip is given special instructions to do so. The command to use the shift register is built into the graphics controller.141-6102098orderable279243http://www.supp-102098.com/cat/hw/p3091.html

Real-world Examples
When solving multi-step problems, there is often a need to reference the output of a subproblem or intermediate result set and/or to bring data at different levels of detail together. Subqueries in the FROM clause are a great solution to these types of problems. A subquery in the FROM clause is often referred to as a derived table or an inline view. I’ll refer to subqueries in the FROM clause as derived tables going forward. Additionally, most SQL dialects require derived tables to be named. The requirement is sensible because the contents of the derived table resulting from the query populating it can be referenced in the outer query and may require fully-qualifying the attribute or column name with the schema and table name.

Explore the following two real-world examples to obtain a better understanding on how this type of subquery can be used.

Top Selling Product by Product Category
Consider the task of generating a report containing information for the top selling product, in terms of quantity sold, for each product category. In the report, the necessary information is the category name, product name, and the total quantity ordered for the specific product. In the query below, a subquery has been used in the FROM clause to determine the rank of each product in terms of quantity sold within each category. This derived table’s contents are then referenced in the outer query and filtered to those products with a quantity rank value of 1 (i.e., the top selling product within each product category). In this case, there is one row per distinct product category; however, in instances of ties within a product category, there will be as many rows as there are products within the category having the same total quantity value. If you’re unfamiliar with the DENSE_RANK function, then consider checking out my DENSE_RANK page for a detailed explanation and additional examples.

SELECT
    product_ranking.category_name,
	product_ranking.product_name,
    product_ranking.total_quantity
FROM (
    SELECT
        oe.categories_tab.category_name,
        oe.product_information.product_name,
        SUM(oe.order_items.quantity) AS total_quantity,
        DENSE_RANK() OVER (
        	PARTITION BY oe.categories_tab.category_name
    		ORDER BY SUM(oe.order_items.quantity) DESC
        ) AS quantity_rank
    FROM
        oe.order_items
        INNER JOIN
        oe.product_information
        	ON oe.order_items.product_id = oe.product_information.product_id
        INNER JOIN
        oe.categories_tab
        	ON oe.product_information.category_id = oe.categories_tab.category_id
    GROUP BY
        oe.categories_tab.category_name,
        oe.product_information.product_name
) product_ranking
WHERE
    product_ranking.quantity_rank = 1
ORDER BY
    product_ranking.total_quantity DESC;

I’d be remiss if I didn’t reiterate why a subquery is used here as opposed to a single SELECT statement. Due to the order in which the clauses are processed, the quantity rank attribute derived in the SELECT clause of the subquery can’t be referenced (i.e., used) in the same SELECT statement to filter to the top selling product(s) in each product category. Because the WHERE clause is processed prior to the SELECT clause, the subquery’s contents are treated as an intermediate result set and filtered by the outer query referencing it.

In the example above, a subquery was used to handle the ranking of products within each product category. Subsequently, the results were referenced in the outer query and filtered to the top selling product in each product category.

In the next example, a subquery in the FROM clause is used to bring data at different levels of detail together for the comparison purposes.

Above, Equal to, or Below Average Salary?
Comparisons require the proper context to be meaningful. In this example, the task is to generate a report comparing each employee’s salary to the average salary of those employees within the same job role. An apples-to-apples comparison, roughly.

In the query below, the outer query returns one row per employee and the derived table, job_salary, returns one row per job ID. See the result set following the query for clarity. Keep in mind some relational database management systems do not require the derived table (i.e., job_salary) to be named; however, consider it a best practice and a requirement when the columns derived in the subquery need to be referenced in the outer query.

SELECT
	hr.employees.employee_id,
    hr.employees.job_id,
    hr.employees.salary,
    job_salary.average_salary,
    hr.employees.salary - job_salary.average_salary AS difference
FROM
	hr.employees
    INNER JOIN (
    SELECT
    	hr.employees.job_id,
    	AVG(hr.employees.salary) AS average_salary
    FROM
    	hr.employees
    GROUP BY
    	hr.employees.job_id
    ) job_salary
    	ON hr.employees.job_id = job_salary.job_id
ORDER BY
    difference DESC;
